During a recent trip to the Shores & Islands in Ohio, we were hosted by A Touch of Italy Bed & Breakfast. All opinions are our own and not influenced in any way.
Up until last year, my family and I always stayed at hotels. Don’t get me wrong, we do enjoy staying at hotels, however, sometimes it’s nice to change things up a bit.
For our 25th Anniversary, we decided to head to Ohio to visit the Lake Erie Shores & Islands. Neither of us had ever been there and what better place to explore together then an island?
While we were researching hotels/condos to stay at, we were offered to be hosted by Debbie and Jim of A Touch of Italy Bed & Breakfast in Port Clinton.
My husband and I are way out of the loop as we have never stayed at a B & B before so this would be something new for us.
Before our visit, I did an article on A Touch of Italy and you can check it out by going here.
While I was talking to Debbie about our visit, she mentioned the Lover’s Package. Of course since this was our 25th Anniversary, we had to get that!
One thing you will notice when you first walk up to the B & B is how quaint the house is! The house was originally built in 1913 by Federic Samuel Wenger who poured which block by himself; which we all know back then would have been a terrific feat! When you pull up to the home, you are taken back by how majestic of a home it is! To see how beautiful the architecture is and at well it has been maintained is a throwback to the craftsmen of that time.
When we arrived at the B & B, we were greeted by Debbie, who was holding a bottle of wine! She welcomed us into her home and we sat down to visit and confirmed what time we wanted breakfast the next two mornings we were there.
She offered us some homemade cookies that were delicious! (There are always goodies awaiting the guests upon your arrival each day!). She offered us a tour of the B & B and explained where everything was in our room and if we needed anything, where we could find it.
The room that we were staying in was the Bella Rosa Room. The room is simply gorgeous!
Bella Rosa Room” meaning Beautiful Rose has a private bathroom. Included in your stay is a comfortable fluffy bathrobe and daily fresh spring water. Each room has a queen-sized bed with a pillow-top mattress, a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, color TV, DVD player, and VCR.
There is an Italian flare to each room and your room has everything you could simply want! Debbie’s previous career of being an nurse definitely became obvious once we looked around the room. It was meticulously clean! There wasn’t a speck of dust ANYWHERE and our room smelled wonderful!
Here are some pictures of our room:
I did not take a picture of the chilled bottle of wine that was in our room, which was also included with our room, as all guests receive a bottle of chilled bottle of Italian wine.
I know that is not so much the norm now but there are still Bed & Breakfasts where you shared a bathroom with other guests staying there. However, that is not the case at A Touch of Italy. Everyone has their own bathroom! Two of the bedrooms have their own attached bathroom and the Bella Roma has a bathroom outside the door.
The bathroom in our room is definitely worth showing pictures of! I know, I know, before you get grossed out that I’m showing pictures of a bathroom, you must know that this wasn’t an ordinary bathroom! Check out these pictures! Debbie had this bathroom stocked like it was her own! There were plenty of fluffy towels, toiletries, a black washrag to use to remove your eye make up (that is something I have NEVER thought of! I now have black washrags in my bathroom for when I remove my eye makeup!), a nice full sized shower (which is something short people don’t think about (I’m under 5’5) but my husband, who is 6’4) greatly appreciated a shower that he could actually fit in! Remember when I mentioned how clean the room was? The bathroom was spotless and very very clean! Here are some pictures of the bathroom in the Bella Rosa!
And there is something extra special about this bathroom! If you look at the pictures above, you will see a clock on the wall. On the left side of the clock, there is a door….a door that goes up a staircase to…..A GAME ROOM!
Debbie and Jim even ensured the Game Room has everything one could want! The mini fridge is stocked with ice cold beer! There is a jar at the top of the fridge so you can leave a donation.
You will receive a complimentary breakfast at A Touch of Italy. All other meals are on your own. Debbie can help you make dinner reservations if you’d like as with your room key, you can get 5 – 10% off at select restaurants:
- 1812 Food & Spirits
- McCarthy’s Pub
- Dock’s Beachhouse
- Mon Ami Winery
- Ciao Bella
Now, let’s talk about the Lovers Package that is offered to all guests. The package is $40 and consists of:
- a cake with an Italian message written on it
- a dozen roses
- a card with a romantic message
- rose petals on the bed
Here is a collage of what was included in our Lovers Package:
Let’s talk about breakfast. Think back to the last breakfast you had while on vacation or even at a family members house? Usually coffee and doughnuts or a basic continental breakfast. Granted there is nothing at all wrong with those, but let’s talk about the breakfast that Debbie has awaiting for you each morning complete with coffee shipped directly from Italy! You are greeted by a mural of Italy that Debbie did herself and Italian music that is flowing gently throughout the room! The table overlooks the bird sanctuary that is just outside. Believe me when I say that even the birds and the squirrels enjoy their breakfast each morning! They know where they have it good!
Below are pictures of the breakfasts that awaited us each morning! Debbie and Jim also maintain a garden that is full of delicious and savory herbs and fruits that are served as part of the breakfast each day. On our second morning there, we were able to try Debbie’s signature breakfast dish which is a Tuscan egg bake! Simply superb! Both breakfasts that we had at A Touch of Italy went way over and beyond what we expected. Believe me when I say that you will NOT want to eat lunch after you depart for your day! Everything is so good!
We can honestly say that the next time we are going to the Lake Erie Islands for a romantic getaway, if she has a vacancy, we will definitely stay at A Touch of Italy Bed & Breakfast! Something I forgot to mention is that they are literally 4/5 blocks away from the Jet Express ferry which takes you to the islands! We left our van there and walked to the docks.
Debbie and Jim have taken running a b & b to the next level! Staying with Debbie and Jim is like staying with old family friends! I am absolutely serious! It seemed like we had known her forever! The extra touches that they provide is second to none! They have set the bar high!
I didn’t give a glowing review because our stay was complimentary. I gave A Touch of Italy the review I did because it was fantastic! We have never stayed at a place where everything is taken care of to a “t”. We’ve recommended A Touch of Italy to all of our friends and family! They are open all year long so there is still plenty of time to plan a Romantic Fall Getaway to the Islands!
I can not thank Debbie and Jim enough for our stay! Grazie!
