Tommy Davidson, is TV personality who, at least for us, became a household name after we started watching “In Living Color” back in 1990. Yes, I know I just dated myself by admitting that! LOL! That’s ok, I’m a child of the 70s and 80s and there is just something that resonates with all of us who grew up in that era! The shows were great, the music was stellar and the clothes….well let’s just say I LOVED having big hair AND wearing shoulder pads! So when I had the opportunity to do an exclusive phone interview with him, it really was the highlight of my week.
Tommy Davidson began his career in Washington DC. He was an opening act for Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, and Kenny G. His first appearance on tv was in “Partners in Crime”. In 1990, he joined David Alan Grier, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx and Damon Wayans in the show, “In Living Color”. Having watched “In Living Color”, I wondered how the cast actually was able to tape a whole show. I can only imagine what it was like working alongside those guys and trying to get through the script. I asked Tommy what it was like working on the set with those guys and he said, “We laughed all day long”. And he also added that most of the show was improvised as they went along. One of the characters that Tommy played in “In Living Color” was Sweet Tooth Jones. I had read that this was his favorite character. I asked him how he created that character. He replied that he based the character on “my love of Kung Fu movies”. Hence, his character, Sweet Tooth Jones, was a karate teacher with an afro.
I also talked to Tommy about his career as a comedian and who he considered his mentor. He replied that his mentor “is Charlie Fleischer”. At first I didn’t recognize his name until he said that Mr. Fleischer is the voice of Roger Rabbit! I know some of you just said, “Roger Rabbit”?? If you google it, you will see who I am talking about. It was another movie from the late 1980s.
Tommy currently has two projects he is focusing on right now. He just wrapped up his appearance on the syndicated show, “Funny You Should Ask”, which will be premiering in September. The show will be hosted by Jon Kelley. For the premiere of the show in September, during it’s All-Star Week, Tommy along with several other comedians, such as: Howie Mandel, Louie Anderson, Jackee Harry, and Jon Lovitz will be asked questions by contestants.
Tommy’s other project, which is a change up from his previous ventures, is called, “Vacation Creation”. The show originally premiered in late 2016 on the CW network. The show was just renewed for a second season and it will be added to the ABC Network. Tommy is hosting the show with Andrea Feczko. The show will bring tv audiences along on various families journeys who have been chosen to experience a cruise vacation of a lifetime that has been totally custom-tailored for each family. The families could be dealing with the loss of a loved one, dealing with a family member who is chronically ill, or families who are in desperate need of some family bonding time.
I asked Tommy about the show and what he wanted the viewers to get from the show. He replied simply, “inspiration”.
Vacation Creation will be premiering on ABC on September 30th. This is one show this Fall that I am really looking forward to seeing. There is so such chaos and bad news in our world each day. I know for me, there is nothing more heartwarming then seeing people who are getting their dreams, which they never thought would happen, granted.
